Credit Unions are a soundly established part of the UK financial sector.

Each Credit Union must be Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) which imposes a strict regulatory regime. Professional auditing is a legal requirement.
The FSA have useful information on pages called Money Made Clear, click here

Members have recourse to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) if they have an unresolved complaint.

Their savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in the same way as they would be with a high street bank or building society.

The Credit Union movement in Wales is supported by important public bodies.

The Welsh Assembly Government has given financial support by grants under the Credit Unions Project and is developing a 'brand image' for credit unions in Wales.

It has helped the movement to have access to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) for Objective 1 and Objective 2 grants.

It provides a Housing Debt Helpline Wales on 0800 107 1340.

Powys County Council, like many other councils, has given grant support to its local credit unions, for example in supporting grants for ERDF Objective 2 projects and providing Payroll Deduction facilities.

The Wales Cooperative Centre provides a number of supporting services for credit unions in Wales, including free training courses in many aspects of the operation of credit unions.
